All useful Polish Duo discussions in one post!

Hi! Recently I thought, that there are so many questions that keep repeating, which could be avoided at least in some part if people had easier access to some great, helpful discussions where many things have already been thoroughly discussed. So I decided to go through all (I hope) topics, and make a list of such topics, so all of it could be in one place. There is some wonderful stuff here that I haven’t seen before simply because it’s several months old and it got lost in a pile of newer posts. I don't have enough time to check every discussion thoroughly, so I can't assess how helpful every one of those is, and the links used in some of them are bound to repeat themselves. Still I hope you will find this little list helpful. If you find something else that you think should be added to this list, please don’t hesitate to comment.

Thanks for this. There are several discussions of Polish pronunciation, but no indication when (or if) spoken Polish is introduced to the course. When should I expect that?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

You mean the speech recognition? As far as I know, this is only up to the company itself and there's nothing the course developers can do about it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jlseymour3

Thanks, Jellei. Yes "speech recognition" is the phrase I was looking for. It's been a feature in each of the other courses I've tackled, so I just assumed it would be here as well, but was starting to wonder.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/flootzavut

This is my understanding too.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AndrewVG19

Thank you so much, this is an amazing source!

On another note, do you think the Polish course will eventually include the "Stories" section? I use the French and Spanish Stories a lot because it's a great way to get the sounds of actual conversations in my ear.
Dziękuję bardzo!

Are you ever going to change the pronunciation do "z" when a sentence is broken into particular words? I Polish you never pronounce "z" as ZE nor ZET, unless it a just a letter in the alphabet. We always pronounce them in sentences like ZZZ. This could be very misleading to beginners.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Toffolux

I always have wondered about that. So how is 'z" (with) pronounced in a sentence as a word on its own? "jestem z tobą" would be "jestem ' zeh' tobą"?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Iw0na7

It becomes 'jestem stobą'. (z becomes voiceless 's' because 't' is voiceless)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/NieNieNieNie

No, not 'zeh', just... z. Sometimes 'z' becomes 'ze' so you pronounce it 'zeh' indeed.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Trofaste

The audio is TTS (text-to-speech) from a third-party company which the contributors cannot control. With the slow audio, it's not reading the words as a sentence, but as individual words, so when it encounters "z" it thinks it is just a letter in the alphabet, which unfortunately the contributors can't do anything about.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AndrewVG19

Yes! To add to this is "w"-- when broken down in the slow-speak option it's pronounced "vu." It makes me think that perhaps when everything was recorded for the course, the native speaker saw a single letter on the page and pronounced it as the name of the alphabetic letter and not the actual word.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Trofaste

The audio wasn't actually recorded for this course, it's text-to-speech. So yes, it sees it as a single letter and gives the name.

Dziękuję bardzo za pomoc :P

I know I am late but why is the Polish Ball's flag upside down? Wouldn't that be Indonesian Ball, I see this everywhere online and it's weird haha

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hotBreathOnTheBk

The official flag of Indonesia has existed since August 17, 1945. For the first time, Polish colors were regulated in a resolution of the Seym of the Kingdom of Poland of February 7, 1831.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

Just the way it is. It's one of the conventions of Polandball to draw Poland upside-down.

Jellei, thank you so much for sending me a truly extensive list of resources to allow me to further my progress in Polish. I have already taken advantage of a few of them already. Hopefully, Duolingo will create another tree which will take on board some of the suggestions made my people. In my case, I found I needed much more sentences that focused on each of the Polish grammatical cases. To have been able to focus on one at a time with extensive practice on each would have enabled me to better understand what needed to be declined and where and when. Nevertheless, I have had a good grounding and I will endeavour to improve my Polish with other resources suggested by you until, hopefully, Duolingo has been able to produce a new "tree". The business is so fortunate to have you on the team and I, for one, with many others truly appreciate your patience, knowledge and efforts to help and support learners. You are a real asset to the team and company. May I just ask if you are a native of Poland. Kind Regards, Barbara

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

Hi, yes I am a native Polish speaker :) I hope in the future we can improve the tree with a lot of better solutions, because we are aware that some things could surely have been done better.

Here are some other really good reasouces that Alik was kind enough to post in reply to a question I had about finding examples of words I had learned on Duo in different contexts alik1989 commented on "Nasza maszyna jest bardzo wydajna."

You should only trust a translation on Reverso Context if you see that the same phrase is translated exactly the same way several times on different websites. And even then, I can't guarantee that it's correct. Bab.la is probably one of my least favourite dictionaries. If you want good examples sentences, I recommend: * https://www.diki.pl/slownik-angielskiego?q=wydawa%C4%87 * https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pl/dictionary/polish-english/wydawac And this is probably one of the best, but it's in Polish: https://wsjp.pl/index.php?id_hasla=5750&ind=0&w_szukaj=wydawa%C4%87 You have to click on the right meaning (which is this case is 1. oszczędności) and then click on cytaty on the right to get examples.

I really appreaciate you spend your time to put this together!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Txasti

Dziękuję!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ttttcc

Very useful! Dziekuje bardzo!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/InuzukaShino

Dziękuję bardzo! By the way: Is there a plan to fill up the course with more explanations? Actually only the first section has some grammatical explanations. It would be very useful if all sections would have such explanations, I think.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

There is a plan to fill the new Tree 2.0 with explanations. We cannot spend hours of our time on Tips & Notes that will soon become obsolete as we are developing a totally new, better tree that will be different in so many aspects. That is also one of the reasons this post was created, to help finding explanations in a different way.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/InuzukaShino

Hi Jellei, nice to read. I suspect I would be through the actual tree and working more with other material then, but I am sure, this would be helpful for all others. So far I saw these explanations only in the English-Polish tree and found this additional informations and explanations about the main points of every step very useful.

Will be some explanations, why the tree will be renewed? Are there any informations about this? Will only the English-Polish tree be renewed or also other languages?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

You can read more about it here. This is just a Polish thing, we have no idea what the others are planning.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/arnematt

Thank you! So happy that I stumbled upon this thread. I can't wait for Tree 2.0 to appear! Would there be anything that we can get our hands on right now already? E. g. , as beta testers? I would already be super happy with access to only a fragment of the tree!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

It's waaaay too early to say anything about such stuff ;)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/antosia4skoly

Jellei: I'm going to Krakow Poland for 2 months starting In April. I will be attending yoga classes as a way to meet Poles. I was hoping you or someone else could provide basic instructions in Polish to help me understand the poses/exercise instructions. I've been practicing Polish on Duolingo and have a basic understanding of Polish, reached 28% proficiency on Duolingo scale but woefully inadequate for living there and for the class. it will be fun to see what instructions if any, could be provided

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/listkiewska

This is probably the most important topic ever done for Polish learners. I salute you!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kestral11

Thank you! I really appreciate everything you've done here. It's helped me so much!!

I don't suppose for the "difference between words" section you could explain lubić and podobać się ( and word order... I never know whether to put mi się before of after podoba)

thank you so much

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PaulKing282586

Very helpful, thank you.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PVLSANS

Czy to jednak poprawne, jeśli mówię "to jest odpowieścią"? Dlaczego tak, dlaczego nie?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

Firstly, "odpowieścią" is not a word, so the question is whether you meant "opowieścią" (a story) or "odpowiedzią" (an answer)...

I can imagine "To jest odpowiedzią" to work in a limited context ("to" would have to refer to something very specific and known, like "this article that you just started reading is an answer to...", but mostly that would be wrong.
