Movies in Hebrew?

Any Hebrew movie suggestions ? Or perhaps French

June 26, 2016

Can people suggest movies with english subtitles too?

I'm pretty sure you can find the ones I wrote with English subtitles, but these ones will have subtitles for sure: סוף העולם שמאלה (turn left at the end of the world), בופור (beaufort), הקיץ של אביה (Aviya's summer), לבנון (Lebanon), ואלס עם באשיר (Waltz with Bashir).

These ones are a little bit more heavy, especially the ones regarding wars of course, but they are extremely good and worth watching.

P.S almost forgot one of my favorites and also a quiet recent one: אפס ביחסי אנוש (Zero motivation).

If you like to laugh I would really suggest looking up what we call Burekas films or "סרטי בורקס", these are hilarious old comedies making fun of the Israeli society. Some classics: ספיחס, אלכס חולה אהבה, גבעת חלפון אינה עונה, אסקימו לימון

If you'd like more serious ones I can also give you a couple of good recommendations.

Ya, don't watch Burekas films. They're quite embarrassing actually for us for the most part. LOW QUALITY WARNING - B MOVIES.

The movie "Footnote" (הערת שוליים) is a great one. It almost won an Oscar! Additionally you can learn from it a lot about the Israeli society and culture.

There's plenty.. if you don't mind series instead of a movie i suggest "shtisel" or "haborer" or "asfur" there's subtitles for shtisel for sure, not sure about there rest. The hebrew in there though is filled with a lot of slang and swear words though.

LOL true, even the title seems to be some kind of slang

Looks like shtisel is available online:

I know it is coming out on JBS tomorrow

There's also "Someone to Run With" מישהו לרוץ איתו However for those who are willing, I strongly recommend reading the book.

"Asaf, a clumsy, naive, and very shy boy working a boring summer job at City Hall, is given quite a mission himself : to take an uncontrollable stray dog from the pound, put it on a leash, and let it lead him back to its owners..."

I second the motion. Though if you're just getting started with books, you're better off starting with Harry Potter - הארי פוטר ואבן החכמים.

I agree that אפס ביחסי אנוש is a good choice. Two additional movies I reccomned watching:

  1. The Bands Visit (ביקור התזמורת) - The Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrives in Israel to play at the opening of an Arab Cultural Center. The band arrives at the airport with no one there to greet them. The Orchestra is sent to the outskirts of a small forgotten Israeli town in the desert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWYlLb0jm8U

  2. Gett, The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (גט: משפטה של ויויאן אמסלם) - This one is quite new, with the same actress as the former one. In Israel the state recognizes marriage and divorce of Jews only if they are done though the Rabbinate Institution which is highly discriminative towards women: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jWp4i9SqqU

Another good movie that is in hebrew is "Ushpazim".

I loved, loved כנפיים שבורות directed by Nir Bergman.

even though i kinda like "Borekas" movies, i'm not gonna suggest any of these. try "Beafourt", or "The 92 Minutes of Mr. Baum" i realy loved. Also "walk on water".

It's been almost 24 hours and now one recommended אפס ביחסי אנוש ("Zero Motivation"). So I got a chance to do it...

I found this movie in YouTube, "Lenin in October", it has English and Hebrew subtitles and it is hilarious. It is a Tv movie, it seems to have parts in Russian. A man wants to open his own restaurante, but he needs to follow the instructions that his uncle left to receive any money. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye_KdOCtjuU

Who would like to watch ZOMBIES, well not quite, in Jerusalem?
Then watch JeruZalem.
The imdb score is not indicative in my opinion.
One of the first Israeli horror films.

כן ירבו.

I vaguely recall being really excited about קלרה הקדושה ("Holy Klara") when it came out. Admittedly, I was in junior high at the time, so who knows?

I second the recommendation for "הקיץ של אביה".

I don't see anyone mention חתונה מאוחרת (Late Marriage) above. Can't remember if it was any good, I watched it years ago.

A recent one that my husband and I watched and thoroughly enjoyed was the docu/mockumentary, קפה נגלר (Cafe Nagler). It definitely had subtitles, I watched it in a crowd full of Americans in an International and/or Jewish Film Festival in the states.

Can't remember many others offhand. But, this might help: https://goo.gl/jipc9z
