Can someone explain 'mae' Here in this context when the sentence seems functional without it?

Mae = is/are

The full sentence would read 'Two sixes are equal to twelve'

However in English this is often abbreviated to 'Two sixes equal twelve'

Without the verb 'mae' at the beginning of the sentence it's not correct grammatically.
