Sentence Discussions are back on Android!
At the beginning of January we had to temporarily turn off sentence discussions on the Android app because we weren't ready to handle spam or otherwise irrelevant comments very well. I'm happy to announce that they've been turned on again!
I'll also preemptively say that sentence discussions will be in the next iOS release provided that they don't hurt our engagement metrics on Android.
Awesome news! The lack of discussion is the sole reason I've been avoiding using the android app for the past few weeks; I find the info I gain access to via discussion vital in many cases. Can't wait to get back into the swing of things. :D
Could you make links clickable within the app? I've been posting a lot of links to great external resources. It would be a shame if those remained inaccessible to app users.
How about allowing the spammers to keep their account active, even as the moderators clean their initial spam. The next time spammer wants to post anything on the site, they need to enter a few reCAPTCHAs. Why not get some payback for the benefit of humanity :)
That's too weak a punishment, a better punishment would be to get them to review several immersion articles, in addition to the re-captcha. With a moderator monitoring their "translations", to prevent spamming there too. This would be something akin to a primary school punishment, of writing:
I shall not spam Duolingo forums, I shall not spam Duolingo Forums, I shall not spam Duolingo forums.
I don't think the problem was spam in the sense you're thinking, but rather the massive influx of legitimate questions. We on the forums tend to underestimate how many people only use the mobile app.
I think, to be more precise, it was people asking the same legitimate questions a hundred times rather than checking to see if there was already an answer.
Looks good. Thanks for bringing that back; it helps a lot.
On a possibly loosely related note (not sure whether or not it uses the same methods) there remains a strange problem when entering a comment for "Report a Problem". Every new line after the second returns focus to the keyboard, and the user must re-click the dialog to continue, repeatedly. Android v.4.1.2, Google Keyboard.
That's good. The lack of sentence discussions on the iOS app is one of the main reasons why I rarely use Duolingo on my iPad. I feel like I'd be lost without. I wish the app also had the tips and notes section too.
I find the sentence discussions quite productive. They help me understand why I might be wrong in my translation. Furthermore it shows me different ways in which to translate. Which is always a good thing. I hope if at all possible that the discussion produces this. Is there any way to flag spam or irrelevant content? In like respect can we be given the option to express why we believe the flagged content is indeed spam or irrelevant?
3 or 4 downvotes hides a comment, flagging comments for mods to deal with is time consuming on their end (have been one in such a system) when there are other things we want them to focus on first i.e. fixing errors in translations or audio files. It's a good idea but I don't know if DL has the staffing for it.
Thank you for this! Like they said, hoping for less spam and waiting for the iOS release too :3.
How do we update the app if we're using it on a Kindle? I don't think I have ever seen discussions of any kind available on the kindle app.
Great! But have you handled the problem of people not getting answers notifications on their phone if they never use the website?
After pressing check it is not possible to select and copy the text we have inputed which is rather helpful when asking why the translation wasn't accepted. Please consider this for the next update.
Thanks but I can't reach the discussions section. Any possible solutions or I'm doing something wrong ? Here is a screenshot; https://www.dropbox.com/s/2kn0jfgy6g9gkxl/Screenshot_2014-02-01-23-36-21.png
Do you have the latest version of the android app ? If you already have it than I suggest using the in-app Feedback button to report your problem to the Duolingo app team. That way they get more information about your specific case.
Yes removed and installed again couple of times but still same. Thanks anyway I send a feedback message. I'm sure they will figure something out.
