Shouldn't it just be "this is the bus" in English?

Yes. "This is that bus" makes very little sense in English.

I can see a VERY limited context. A school bus driver is called to sub for someone who's sick, and realizes too late it's the one with all the rowdy kids... "Oh, this is THAT bus." But yeah. Other than that, I wouldn't ever use it.

Can someone break this down for me?

"Ez" = "this," "az a busz" is literally "that the bus" but means "that bus." The "is" ("van") is omitted in equational sentences like this.

That would be "Ez a busz."

Yes, but if this is the bus you were talking of earlier, than "this is the bus" would be the matching expression in English. Direct translations aren't always the best. They become unnatural in English for what they are expressing.

Still no correction to the English translation?

I am advertising a bus to be sold. The buyer comes in and asks which one is the bus. I will answer: This is that bus (that I advertised to be sold).

A native English speaker would not reply with "This is that bus". A native speaker would reply "This is the bus I advertised".

No English speaker would say "This is that bus."
