"Lần đầu tiên bạn học tiếng Việt?"

Translation:Is this your first time studying Vietnamese?

July 6, 2016

The Vietnamese doesn't seem natural to me. It seems more like a statement and I don't find Vietnamese to be like English where you can just raise your intonation to make it a question. I think there'd need to be a question marker like hả or à.

why "is it the first time ...." not accepted?

I agree with you

Should this not have a co/khong to denote a question?

you can also phrase it as:

Đây là lần đầu tiên học tiếng Việt?

or if you want to use có/không:

Đây có phải là lần đầu tiên học tiếng Việt không?

but you can omit có and không and just use a question mark to indicate a question.

REALLY late, but the co/khong construction is for asking "do/do not" questions

Can this also be translated as "Is this the first time you've studied Vietnamese"?

would it be possible to accept "is this the first time you are studying Vietnamese"?

Is the first time you learn Vietnamese? What's wrong?

“Is this your first time studying Vietnamese?” would be “Đay là lần đầu tiên bạn học tiếng Việt hả?” or “Đay có phẩy là lần đầu tiên bạn học tiếng Viềt không?” The way it is now translates to the more formal “This you first time learning Vietnamese?” because the “is this” isn’t there in the form of “là”. Even then, mót native speakers would add a “hả” to clarify that it is a question: “Lần đầu tiên bạn học tiếng Việt hả?”
