Probably a coincidence, but this sounds like "cariad" which is "dear" :-)

It is a coincidence, but that's a great way to remember it!

    Any relation to "caribou"?

The University of Wales dictionary lists its origin from old Cornish 'Caruu' and also from latin 'Cervus'

Since Caribou is from the French and French is heavily influenced by Latin, it seems there is some connection.

Caribou comes from a First Nations (Native Canadian) language through French, so no connection.

Specifically Mi'kmaq qalipu, related to the verb qalipi "to shovel snow"
