Back in the first half of the 20th century, many English speaking people - no so much in USA - would have said "I want to know from where life originates". Kinda similar ... from where ... từ đâu.

won't it be clearer to add the word 'from' to the end of the sentence?

It's unnecessary in English.

But in English, ở đâu seems indicated, given normal VN--> English translations. "From" would remind us to use 'từ' here.

Yet another sentence the purpose of which seems to be to trip up the learner. The English is similar to numerous sentences using the word "where" translated to Vietnamese ở đâu. But here, based on previous experience, you choose ở đâu and ...... gotcha.
