Can someone tell if these 13 practical, short sentence are correct?

Hi I have these 13 sentences that I think are good to know if you are going to talk in esperanto as a "comencanto". Can you tell me if they are correct? 1. Mi ne konas. 2. Mi ne komprenas. 3. Ĉu vi povas ripeti ĝi? 4. Ĉu vi povas malrapide paroli? 5. Ĉu vi povas ĝi surpaperigi? 6. Ĉu vi povas klarigi ĝi? 7. Kiel oni diras "buso"? 8. Kio signifas "Vi povas multe helpiĝi de tiu ĉi vortaro"? 9. Kiel oni diras "mi dormas!" en la sveda? 10. Unu momento. 11. Bonvolu atendi. 12. I devas elserĉi tiun (en vortaro). 13. Mi komprenas tiun, ke vi diras, sed mi ne konas kiel respondi.

Here they are in English as a reference: 1. I don’t know. 2. I don’t understand. 3. Please repeat it. 4. Please speak slowly. 5. Please write it down. 6. Please explain it. 7. How do you say "bus"? 8. What is the meaning of "This dictionary will be of great help to you"? 9. How do you say "I'm sleeping!" in Swedish? 10. One moment 11. Please wait 12. I have to look that up 13. I understand what you say, but I don't know how to answer

  1. Mi ne scias. ("Mi ne konas" is correct, but it means more "I am not acquinted with")
  2. bone.
  3. Ĉu vi povas ripeti ĝin. / Bonvolu ripeti.
  4. bone. It is better to say "Bonvolu paroli malpli rapide" (Please speak more slowly) because if you say "Can you speak slowly", you mean he does not speak slowly, which can be wrong from a komencanto POV.
  5. bone, but that's weird. Bonvolu skribi ĝin. "Ĉu vi povas skribi ĝin" is correct.
  6. bone. Use "Ĉu vi povas klarigi tion" if you want information about an action or a situation. Bonvolu klarigi tion.
  7. bone
  8. Kion signifas "..." ? (See it like that: ".." signifas kion?). Tiu vortaro povas multe helpi vin.
  9. bone
  10. Unu momenton. Momenton. ([Al mi, donu] unu momenton)
  11. bone
  12. Mi devas kontroli. (I have to check) Mi devas konsulti vortaron. (I have to check/consult a dictionnary)
  13. Mi komprenas vian demandon, sed mi ne scias kiel respondi. Mi komprenas tiun demandon, kiun vi diris, sed mi ne scias kiel respondi. Mi komprenas tion, kion vi diris, sed mi ne scias kiel respondi.

The only thing I would add (from practical experience) is that for a sentence like number 4, you'll want to to get to your point quickly. I would suggest something like "Malrapide, mi petas." You could even get away with "malrapide."

The trouble is that when you're starting out, it's easy to stumble over your words - and if you're in a situation when someone is speaking too fast, you're going to feel flustered already and you're going to need to jump in and let them know. A shorter sentence would be easier for you to say, and getting right to the point would be appreciated. More words makes it neither more clear nor more polite.

This happened to me just last week. I was trying to have a conversation with someone and he jumped in with "uhh ... mal... ra... pi....de." I immediately got the message that this gentleman was new and that my words were just blowing by him. I slowed down, spoke extra clearly, and tried to use basic words. If he had instead said "mo...men...ton..., mi... est..us.. mul..te... pli... kon...ten...ta... se... vi... tre.. a...fa...ble.. bon...vo...lus.. pa...ro...li.. en... ma...ni...er...o mul...te... mal...pli... ra...pi....da" I would have gone crazy. :-)

Good point though, malrapide mi petas, or possibly just' mi estas komencanto,' followed by that smile that says 'bear with me' and a request to 'uzu facilajn vortojn' would probably work wonders.

I think 95% plus of Esperanto speakers will happily accomodate the newcomer and be pleasantly helpful and encouraging. We don't need to worry about the other 5%, they have their own issues. :-)
