Edit: Many thanks for all the encouraging comments. It is great having the support of others while learning. To each of you, I wish you the best with your studies!
this may be a little off topic, but i am a native English speaker and i want to learn a second language my language of choice just so happen to be Dutch. I've watch many videos just started duolingo and memrise but it seems as if i dont know where to make a start at this language learning process. Some people are like cram vocab then some are like learn grammer rules first im so unsure and feel lost at sea with learning a new language and i feel that i would have a real passion for learning languages. i just have no idea how to go about it or were to start or what i need to be doing to be able to start producing correct sentences and putting things together any help???
Hello. Learning a new language can sometimes be overwhelming. Confidence is very important. Do not feel discouraged even if you pronounce a word incorrectly or the grammar is wrong. Just keep going! I am no expert and studying varies from person to person but perhaps these tips can help: 1. Learn how to greet in the language. Words such as "hello", "goodbye", "thank you", "yes", "no" etc. 2. Slowly increase your vocabulary. You cannot form a sentence if you don't know the terms. Start by learning the words of everyday objects. You can write down the words on little pieces of paper and stick them on the object. For example: "stoel" on a chair, "tafel" on a table, "deur" on a door. You can also start writing your grocery lists in Dutch. Each lesson of Duolingo provides you with new words. Write these words in a notebook along with their English translation. 3. Search on the internet for Dutch songs and their lyrics. If you enjoy Disney films you can listen to the Dutch dub of the songs. Try and sing along! 4. Write in your notebook the grammar advice Duolingo provides and as you study try and apply the rules. Overall what keeps me motivated is questioning how a sentence will be constructed in the language I want to learn (Dutch). Hope you find these tips helpful. Study bit by bit. Review if you don't understand. Don't give up. You can do it!
