The name Duolingo

Hey guys, umm so the other day, I was thinking about duolingo, and it got me wondering . Why did you give duolingo it's name ? and what does it mean ?

It could also be Latin. Lingua is tongue or language. :)

True. But "Lingo" is an English word. Perhaps derived from Latin.

And there you're right. We can agree that duolingo is a portmanteau with Romantic roots.

It's probably a reference to Quinto Lingo, a magazine published form 1964 to 1980 which had five parallel columns in five languages; German, French, English, Spanish and Italian. Later editions also added Esperanto.

I don't think the two ideas are incompatible. Quito Lingo was very well known in its day.

Duo lingo is somewhat multinational (perhaps because it is very close to Latin and Latin is such a good base (at least for the languages available here at first (even german shares a good bit of Latin vocabulary))
