Is this free in the sense of gratis?

correct, it's not paid.

Shouldn't be 'This telephone is not for free' accepted too?

Whats the difference between szabad and ingyenes

The first is "free as in speech", the second "free as in beer". English does not distinguish between those 2 concepts in everyday language.

This comment also of course applies to the telephone which is not "free of charge". Calls from this telephone must be paid for is the more correct translation.

"Ingyen" always refers to money, so "gratis" is a good translation. Then you have two versions: 1."ez ingyen" and 2."ez ingyenes"

  1. Is related to the object (i.e. phone itself costs nothing and u can take it home with u)

  2. Refers to the use (i.e. you can make a call without paying for it, but u have to give the phone back to the owner)

Perhaps better to use either "gratis" or "with out charge". In practice there would be a small notice stating that "there is no charge for the newspapers on the table" or "The newspapers on the table are free of charge".

Could be - but most often you just see "Free!".
