Prayers in the " unreal " conditional have a part of the sentence beginning with the word "if" and contain a verb that seems like the past, the other part of the sentence containing the verb in the conditional with "would" , If the part of the sentence with "if" goes first , use a comma These sentences are known as " unreal conditional" because it contains conditions that are not very likely to occur ( they are unreal ) . For example , "If I won the lottery , I would buy a new car"

The only exception is the verb "to be" . Traditionally considered grammatically correct to use "were" in the subjunctive even with the first person singular ( "I" ) and the third person singular ( he / she / it) . However , many people currently use "was" in such cases and even sometimes in books as an alternative that is considered correct another example, " If I was rich , I would travel around the world"
