Is this word order to provide emphasis?

Yes exactly.

You could have a sentence Mae America yn wlad fawr which would be simply descriptive (America is a big country)

By changing the word order you introduce emphasis which is not so easy to show in written English.

(something like 'America IS a big country)

Would it be corrrect here to translate "gwlad" as "nation" rather than "country"?

No. That would probably be cenedl, depending on the context and meaning intended.

Well, it's possible, but it sounds odd in comparison with 'a big country'.
