How does Duolingo make money?

I am entirely new to the Duolingo site. I haven't seen any for-pay services or advertisements, so I'm a bit curious what the business model is.

Such a cool idea :D

In the forbes article it says:

Duolingo’s primary way to make money right now is through its web browser version, though 4 out of 5 users are playing on their phones. The company makes money by crowd-sourcing pieces of translation done by its students and selling them to companies like CNN and BuzzFeed.

No idea what that means in real terms though

https://www.duolingo.com/Dappernaut

They're selling data. Although, unlike most websites, it's not data we don't realize we're giving.

https://www.duolingo.com/euFelipeMoreno

That's brilliant.

https://www.duolingo.com/tcpsilva

what do you mean? do we realize we are giving away data to them? what kind of data?

https://www.duolingo.com/skyrocks93

No he's saying most websites make money off of the data like what browser you're using, and what websites you visit. Which most people don't realize is being recorded. But duolingo is making money from data that is freely given to it by the users like translations for sentences.

If you use immersion and translate documents they sell the documents you translate to big companies

Love languages, but always struggled, until now, DuoLingo is the best tutor ever and I think I tried them all. It's unique combination of alternating tasks and collectible points can keep me engrossed for hours. All the competition are a chore, DuoLingo is a joy.

This is a really great idea, but I'm a bit slow and I don't really get it. If we give a somewhat more fluent and accurate translation that Duolingo does not yet have, would it not process it as incorrect?

https://www.duolingo.com/Nithila_S.

Also, would it not cost an outrageous amount of money to create a quality website like this? I don't really get business.

First off, that is outrageously brilliant and you guys are awesome. Secondly, is it safe to assume the translations are then sold to companies, and this is how duolingo maintains server costs, salaries, etc.?

I'm not trying to be all "grr, big bad company that makes money." I'm just curious.

So, we are helping translate website like recaptcha did or make a better translator(?) that is great, this my first time to hear about it although I'm using Duo for years, but it didn't explain how Duolingo work in today's monetary-market system.

After I know this truth, I went to the "about" link on Duolingo web, it didn't talk about this project and it's hiring employee, so you Duos have some special fund from...?

https://www.duolingo.com/olafblitz

well right now they are getting people intersested. in a few months they will charge money because they know people like their site. i also read that they will make it 4 times less expensive as rosetta stone

https://www.duolingo.com/superdaisy

Where did you read that they are considering charging? This Slate article says the opposite, though they do not quote (http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/technology/2014/01/duolingo_the_free_language_learning_app_that_s_addictive_and_fun.html)

Quote: Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Duolingo: It doesn’t cost a cent. It’s free to download and, according to 34-year-old co-founder Luis von Ahn, it will be free forever. When von Ahn gushes about his creation, he’s less excited by the idea of yuppie professionals in Manhattan brushing up on their Italian and more enthused about folks in Latin America attempting to improve their socioeconomic status.

Again: according to 34-year-old co-founder Luis von Ahn, it will be free forever.
