Immersion gone

Immersion has disappeared for me (16:14 BST). Is it gone for everyone else as well? If it is, does anyone know if it's just a glitch or if it's been removed?

More detail (may be edited as new information comes to light (or is remembered)):

I just checked my A/B test options and "web_noimmersion_experiment" is marked as "false". "immersion_enabled" is "true".
I can still access and edit articles via direct links but the tab at the top is gone.
I can still upload documents if I go directly to www.duolingo.com/translations/upload, but I cannot get to the Immersion main page by going directly to www.duolingo.com/translations.
My language is currently set to French, which had Immersion before, so it's not that all of us without it are on the wrong languages.
I'm using Google Chrome on Windows 7.

Edit: Fixed as of 19:38 BST!

I really hope the staff does comment on this post, we're all anxious to find out if it will be back for all, or gone for good.

It's gone for me. After the several times this has happened, the team responded saying it was a bug or glitch fix, so I'm not concerned yet.

{previous version of this comment deleted}

I mixed(*) thing about what means "false" for this old A/B test.
It means "you're not in the group that don't have immersion", so I was wrong asserting it may not be a glitch.
No reason to think it's not a glitch, IMO (until further informations).

Same situation here. The tab disappeared for all my languages, even though I can still access and edit translations via direct links. I really hope it's just another glitch or that they turned it off temporarily in order to actually improve it.
I don't understand why they would want to get rid of immersion in the first place. It's the best thing this site has to offer by a long way. The courses themselves are just mediocre at best. Immersion is what makes this site really stand out.
I would gladly pay for this feature if I had to. If immersion poses that much of a problem as some people seem to claim, why don't they just turn it into a paid service for the people that are really interested...

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/John00625

I checked my other account with immersion and the tab disappeared [11:49 EST]

Could this be like the Activity tab disappearing?

I really hope that Immersion won't be gone, XP stealers and all, it's a big part of why I use Duolingo to learn French.

[EDIT: 12:59 EST] Does anybody remember iDuolinguist's post about immersion? I tried that method and it doesn't work, it either lags the page or goes to 404.

My post: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/16080760 has 2 methods to getting immersion, to which one isn't working(Incognito), and one I haven't tried yet.(uploading)

[EDIT 1:11 PM EST] Yesterday there were people who exploited a glitch to get 1000's of lingots, both of those accounts have been shadowbanned and now immersion is down, do you think the two are connected??

[EDIT 2:21 EST] Upload method still works, stocking up on some articles just in case the tab is down for a couple days.

[EDIT 2:51 EST] Back to normal.

One of your account still have Immersion (I mean officially = has the Immersion tab)?

July 22, 2016

No. I only have 2 accounts and this one never had it, my other was an account from a friend irl who gave it to me who wanted to quit DL.

Sorry for saying, I like Duolingo really. I have learned a lot here. But I am "over the trees". So, when immersion is gone. What shall I do here? Duolingo is then only for beginners until "B1", like all the other platforms. Is there any other platform in the www with something like immersion?

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

If (and when) Duo close (really) totally Immersion, it doesn't mean they'll not come with something else to replace it.
My personal guess is that the main reason to not have closed it yet despite it's 2 years they decided it had no future into Duolingo, is because they don't want to close it without "replacement". My guess.

Several users have reported that there is a new conversation feature on the apps being tested. This was first mentioned to be coming during Luis's January quora session, when he mention a conversation feature, and a secret feature (now known to be Tinycards).

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

Yes. But is one the replacement of Immersion, not sure (for once it's on apps and not on web version).

Thanks for your assessment.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/PERCE_NEIGE

The "replacement" seems to be those "clubs". If it's a replacement it's a very useless one !! So many useful things they removed from Duo. There is no way to see the list of the learnt word, to see our progress, like this was the case before. Duolingo is not listening to his user. I know it has to make choices, that us, as users, we don't always understand, but it seems poorer and poorer. And they are very very bad at communicating. I'm afraid to go the same way as Livemocha did.

January 31, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

There is no way to see the list of the learnt word

I still have it for the courses having(*) it.

(*) Not all courses do, it has always been like that.

January 31, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Teenage_Polyglot

Removed for me as well. All my A_B tests appear to be the same, so it isn't a test (at least for me). it could be a glitch (most probable) or it may be gone.

EDIT [11:22 EST] It appears that it is possible to access articles through direct links. This makes me lean even more towards a glitch.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

All my A_B tests appear to be the same

Do you mean it was already set to "false" before but you nevertheless had Immersion before?

EDITION: irrelevant question, sorry. See below.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Ifphigenia

@jrkhal and A_User ...... My A/B test options are all the same as before and also show "web_noimmersion_experiment_false"

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

By "all the same", you mean it was showing already "false" (for this A/B test) before but you had the Immersion tab before?

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Ifphigenia

Yes, as far as I can remember and I did take careful note, it said "false" before when we had the last episode .... But, crucially, like an idiot, I didn't check it once the apparent glitch was fixed, so, it's possible that once it was working again they had changed it to "true" and have now reverted it to "false" causing it to disappear again ..... I will make another bug report and see what happens.

Edit: bug report sent.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

Thx for the info.

Mmm.. I think I've been confused: "false" = you're not in the test group so you should have it.
Mea culpa.

Question: Was the immersion accessible with a direct URL to a specific article during last events? I can't remember on that.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

I believe it was.
[A_User]

As far as I remember nothing was available using the URL before [...] I can't be certain about specific articles but I am pretty sure everything disappeared.
[Ifphigenia]

Then:

  • either it's a bug but not the same as before
I can access articles from their URL
  • or Duo is "moving on".

@jrkhal No need for mea culpa I think we are all confused. ....

As far as I remember nothing was available using the URL before, certainly the URL to the immersion page itself was unavailable, it just returned 404. I can't be certain about specific articles but I am pretty sure everything disappeared.

The A/B test only takes away the tab, I think. Victims can still use links.

July 22, 2016

So far, but if this is removing Immersion we can't expect that to continue.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/amaratea

If it were complete Immersion removal, articles would be utilgjengelige too.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

Or they may want to decrease the number of accounts using it (hoping, many will not try direct URL and not reach info in the forums), in order to stop the increase of work it gives them (maintaining bigger and bigger database, respond to abuse, fix bugs, etc.) for a feature they:

  • don't plan to have a future in Duolingo
  • already stopped to improve.

But it can be a bug too. In which case it's a new one (articles are still accessible this time)

EDIT:

With the URL to Immersion's main returning blank/empty page, we're not able to add new article.
In the same time, we can access old ones for wish we know the direct URL.

This sounds to me [so only a guess] like possibly be Duolingo not wanting new articles (to slowly shut it down?) but letting those existing being accessible (to make it smooth?).

https://www.duolingo.com/Ifphigenia

Sad but true!

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/John00625

More work for them! Instead of copying and pasting the translation, they have to type it out into Google translate, than copy paste into Duolingo! or Duolingo can block pasting anything over 5 characters (so you can still enable copying and pasting special characters into Immersion)

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/b05aplmun.ca

Blocking copy and past of large blocks of text is a bad idea. I do all my translation in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste, because the text box is too small for working with long sentences. It is also far too easy to post prematurely. Other people, I gather, have the same approach for roughly the same reasons.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/A_User

They could just copy the original text into GT... Not enough more work to stop them, imo.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/John00625

@A_user As far as I know, I haven't ever been able to copy from the document, I use Google Chrome and it may be different for other browsers

@b05aplmun.ca I see your point, and it can be a pain especially when Immersion pushes 10 or more sentences together.

July 22, 2016

Noticed while sending a bug report: The "Help" section for Immersion is still there. It would be really bizarre to remove Immersion without removing that.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Teenage_Polyglot

Duo staff can be a bit forgetful.

On the main page, they still mention hearts as one of their features, a feature that has been gone for over a year. The languages the app description says it teaches hasn't been updated in months as well.

The fact that immerssion still has a help section is interesting, but unfortunately not proof of anything really.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/A_User

What? I remember hearts...

Not proof of anything, except that if Immersion really is gone than it's bizarre. :-P

July 22, 2016

Not really, they aren't "up-to-date" with other things in the Support pages.

July 22, 2016

Well, I suppose that if immersion does disappear, there's nothing to stop me from going and reading es.wikipedia.org, de.wikipedia.org, etc., which is mostly what I do on immersion anyway. It would still be a pain, though.

Should we all send bug reports to let them know we're unhappy?

No, the bug report isn't done to share opinions.

"Should we send bug reports to let them know Immersion tab has disappeared?"
=> Yes.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Theron126

No, I wasn't proposing bug reports to complain. Just wondering if they get a lot of bug reports so they know people are using immersion, will they reconsider if it is in fact a deliberate decision.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

I don't think so.
They know that if they take is down, it'll get part of the users not happy.
So if (and when) they decide to take it down, it'll be while knowing that.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Theron126

Of course. The question would be if the traction was stronger than they anticipated. But I won't bug them right now (see what I did there?)

July 22, 2016

traction... reaction, of course. I'd blame autocorrect, but I don't have autocorrect...

Good thought, I'll go do that.

July 22, 2016

It might be just a glitch... I think It would be very disrespectful to get rid of immersion without telling us in advance.

July 22, 2016

We did already know that they've been running an A/B test on removing it... It might be that they've ended that and decided to remove it, but we can't say we didn't have any warning.

Really? I didn't know that, where did they say that?... Forum?

July 22, 2016

I don't actually remember when or how we first discovered this... But it's pretty well known now and if you look at your A/B test options you can see "web_noimmersion_experiment" and "immersion_enabled", which is pretty clear.

July 22, 2016

Personally, I would have preferred a notification. They're not shy about notifying me about everything else under the Sun.

What is the "A/B" test options? I have no idea.

See comments in this discussion about that. For example:

I think It would be very disrespectful to get rid of immersion without telling us in advance.

I don't remember Duo communicating about a feature being removed/changed before it happened (in which case they sometimes make a comment confirming it) in case it creates a lot of "noise" in the forums.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/senyb

This is really bad. I know Duolingo is more interested in mobile app users and selling test services to people learning English than the dedicated few who want to flex their translation muscles. But if the immersion goes bye-bye for good, I will have to think twice about recommending this service to language learners. There are plenty of free tools for learning English, but there is (was) only one Duolingo. I hope this isn't the end.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/mustnotquit

If this is the case then I'm hoping that someone with the knowledge and capabilities will form a strong competitor.

I don't get why they would do this. The whole point of this site is learning languages.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

I don't get why they would do this. The whole point of this site is learning languages.

if you mean why they would close it: for example to free the part of techs' time that is currently used to maintain and monitor Immersion, and that they could reallocate to developing/improving/fixing other parts of Duolingo that they want to develop (not the case of Immersion).
Therefore doing it would in some way contribute to improve language learning, by developing/improving new tools (or the existing ones they plan to keep developing).

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/mustnotquit

What could be more important to learning a language than immersion?

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

I thought that the courses were developed by people outside of the tech team.

Yes. I don't think someone said the contrary.
But Immersion isn't part of the courses' content, it's not created/maintained/etc. by volunteers but by staff.

Developers working on the technical aspects of the website while other people worked on the language courses.

But...

And they are now having tinycards.duolingo.com also on their plate.

So gaining more time from things they officially abandoned (developing) would make sense.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/rburkey2005

I understand jrikhal's perspective. Obviously whoever is in charge of development has to allocate resources however they see fit. And as a software developer myself, I can certainly respect the size of the to-do list. And, although it's unstated, duo is a service that we users don't pay for, so our wishes obviously take a back seat to whatever particular initiative is currently exciting to those in charge.

With that said, I'm nevertheless entirely in agreement with PERCE_NEIGE. The Skills training is great and works well, for a complete beginner in a language, but only goes so far. Immersion had very limited in scope as well --- it covered only reading comprehension, or if used in reverse, writing skill --- but it was something that allowed you to continue doing something useful even after there was nothing left to do in Skills, and to do so to quite a high level. And indeed, it was so effective, that you could almost learn to read a language using it. Today, I can say that I know how to read Spanish and German --- not well, perhaps, but I can do it! --- almost entirely due to Immersion.

If Immersion is gone, then not only do I have almost no reason to keep using duo myself (which is perhaps not so important to me any longer), but those who are now beginning to work with duo as I was several years ago will now not have the option of using Immersion, and will not learn to read Spanish or German or whatever beyond the extremely simplistic kinds of sentences that appear in Skills. I am better off for the time I spent using duo, because I can now read a couple of languages I couldn't before, whereas those poor folks starting out with duo today, even if they devoted an equivalent amount of time and energy, will gain far less than I did.

Oh, and yes, like PERCE_NEIGE, there were other languages I wanted to learn, and yes, they've never advanced to the point of being usable, and yes, that disappointed me. Though if Immersion is gone, I admit that I don't really care.

Just my 2 cents.

February 4, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/rburkey2005

@jrikhall

Alas! As a software developer, I always cringe when I'm told to remove features that work well, in order to concentrate on new features of uncertain effectiveness. And given how stunningly well Immersion worked, and with no equivalent functionality being offered by anybody anywhere else that I know of, I'm sure it must have been doubly painful for them to decide to discard what was arguably their second-most-effective tool (after Skills).

Oh well, I guess I'll be reading books from now on. Thanks for your explanation.

February 4, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/PERCE_NEIGE

I left Duolingo because of life, busy elsewhere. I left for 2 years, and I had been back these days. I'm disappointed to see that within 2 years, Duoligno is nearly the same that the one I left 2 years ago, (and even inferior because of this unique feature, immersion, that is dead now). There are more languages, but very few in comparison of what I hoped... Some languages have been in the incubator for 2 years or more, and the audio that were wrong, despite what I hoped with the reports user made, haven't been corrected. I still love Duolingo, but it didn't evolved much, and the few it did, wasn't in the direction our optimism and enthousiasm let us hope. I was so happy to realize that every volunteers fluent in two languages, could make a course, I though that a lot of possibilities, with rare languages, were open to us! I heard many many people saying that they were offering their help to help the course to go out from the incubator, but had exactly 0 replies from Duolingo...

Mainly not Duo/staff's "fault", no? ;)

but had exactly 0 replies from Duolingo...

The Skills training is great and works well, for a complete beginner in a language, but only goes so far

As far as I could read from staff up to now, it's their focus (see here for example).
They may one day focus in going further but for now their goal is to bring users to level A2 (B1 for some skills in some languages).

Whatever the "positive" side of Immersion (as it exist on Duo) is, Duolingo estimated it wasn't worth: the developpers/techs time it would take to have it for all courses and to have it maintained for all courses (already 62 existing + 22 under construction and counting), see articles linked in previous comment.

So it's (unfortunately, maybe) a fact that they don't want to develop it.
Then once that acted, keeping it is just consuming dev/tech time when it could be put in something (that some will find better, some not) isn't nonsense. ;)

Also, I think the whole point of the A/B test was to evaluate Immersion by whatever metrics they thought were relevant - whether it was user retention or some other aspect of usage that they thought probably would correlate with learning.

If the test found that Immersion did not have a beneficial effect on whatever they were evaluating, than that would be another reason to ditch it (and stop pouring resources into it).

I thought that the courses were developed by people outside of the tech team. Developers working on the technical aspects of the website while other people worked on the language courses.

Immersion was an unique feature. I'm really disappointed they removed it. It removes all the creative part of the teaching here, because learning a language is not only learning bits of sentences, it's also to make our own ones. Livemocha had this, Busuu has a section where the user write a short text and get a correction from native, but Duolingo has nothing creative now, I really hope they'll add soon a way to make our own sentences, to make a difference with other learning apps that are a bunch nowadays.

Neither can I. We really need a true competitor to Duolingo. I've been trying Babbel for a while. Sucks it's paid though.

Immersion is now working (has been for a little while), and I am glad.

I was under the impression that duolingo's monetization model is teaching you just enough of the language to turn you into a translator for it, and then they earn money from having you translate commercial articles uploaded to immersion. At least that's what they used to say. If that's true, their business focus certainly would be on immersion, and not on mobile apps.

They decided to stop developing Immersion long ago (they made public announcement 1 year ago, but seemed to have taken the decisions long before).

  • This article infers it has been abandoned (paragraph with "“It was a race to the bottom,”") then just after says "But in 2013". So the decision made have been taken in late 2013 or 2014.

See older comments in this discussion about that. For example:

Immersion isn't really gone, only the tab in the top blue menu is together with the main Immersion page returning blank page (well.. gray page ;) )..

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/NeleHeike

But the tab is important to get some information about your work e.g. which articles you edit, and to see which upvotes you get etc. And it is also important, so that there are also other users in immersion, it isn't half the fun and half so valuable when you are alone in immersion (with the time). These are my concerns.

July 22, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

so that there are also other users in immersion

I'm not sure Duo wants the userbase of Immersion to increase since it'd be more work for them to put into a feature they decided to not develop anymore.

Now my immersion is gone, six months later after A_user. I am using Google Chrome on Win 10. I have Home, Words, Activity, and Discussion, but no Immersion. Sad. Can this be fixed?

Why would I read forums to learn about retiring an entire section of the site?

April 5, 2017

Theron126 - They seem to manage to spam me regularly by email about crap I'm not interested in...

April 5, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Turkeyphant

I got tons of emails about the introduction of "Clubs" (which don't even work on web) and none about the removal of Immersion which I've been active in.

April 5, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Theron126

Forum posts are the normal method they use for public announcements. How did you expect them to let you know?

Plus they've been open for quite a while about planning to get rid of Immersion eventually. There are plenty of things I'm unhappy about, but not letting people know is one thing I can't fault them for.

April 5, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Theron126

Yeah, I'd probably be annoyed about that too... I have no idea why you get that and I don't. I looked in settings and didn't see anything obviously related.

April 6, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/jharrer

Thanks jinkhal and Theron126. I somehow missed that notice. I'm glad we could use iimmersion as long as we did - it was so much fun. Maybe something else will come along, I hope.

That's irrelevant to any sort of translation for practice.
