Assamese

Hi everyone! I was recently looking at the "Suggest A New Course Page" in the popular section, and I noticed Assamese wasn't on it.

I did a quick search. Although Assamese has been mentioned in many comments, there wasn't a dedicated post for it, so I decided to make one.

All native speakers: Please contribute and urge others to do the same! Thank you!

You can apply here: https://incubator.duolingo.com/apply.

Assamese is spoken in the Indian state of Assam by about 20 million people. It is also spoken in Bangladesh. You can find out more here, including the alphabet: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/assamese.htm. It should also be noted that Google Translate does not have this language yet.

I've added Assamese to [GUIDE] I would like to suggest a new course: what should I do?

Thanks, Multi0Lingual4!

I noticed you put Cantonese as a language, and then Chinese, Cantonese is Chinese though

Maybe they meant to put Mandarin instead of Chinese.

Cantonese is its own language or Chinese dialect. Mandarin is the common language of China but it has many languages or dialects including Fukkien/Hokkien, Hakka, Shanghainese, Cantonese, and others.

When people talk about the language of India, they think Hindi, but there are 22 official languages and other minor ones.

Can you add some info about the language to your post?

As a language enthusiast, I'd love to have Assamese on Duolingo.

Yes I completely support this and have applied in the incubator to create a course for English speakers to learn Assamese. Thanks!

Here's my comment from today on the same subject -- bilingually in Assamese and English: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26724874

Would it be possible for you to make your own lessons on the Duolingo language forum?

For example: You can make a post teaching us basic greetings like "hello" "goodbye" etc.

That sounds interesting. Could you elaborate a bit on the thought? I am assuming you are thinking of something more than what is in omniglot, right? https://www.omniglot.com/language/phrases/assamese.php

Also: just to confirm: were you thinking of a post in this "Duolingo (for English)" forum or is the language forum a different location within the Duolingo site? Thanks

Yes. Here's an example:

It's little short, and it's formatted incorrectly, but you get the basic idea. You could even have example sentences!

In the Duolingo (English) forum, pretty please.

Got it, thank you. Sure -- I'll give it a shot with a trial lesson in the next few days.
