For those of you who aren't familiar with guinea pigs, they really do love food just like a true pig. After having one for a good while he has taken to "whistling" loudly when the fridge door opens.

So today I was learning Esperanto, and a sentence came up, "I see the apple." or something like that. I read it out loud in Esperanto and my Guinea Pig starts whistling. I have sneaking suspicion...

I always feel like Kobaïan (a language invented for the music group Magma) is guinea pig language... not because of the sound of the language itself, just because of the name.

I know about opening fridge doors. Years ago whenever I opened the fridge door, my cats would come running, so instead of calling them when I wanted them, all I had to do was open the fridge door.

When I had 5 dogs and wanted them to come, instead of yelling, I used to shake pop cans that had 5 pennies inside each one. It had to be pennies. It was something to do with the sound of copper against tin. They associate the sound with a reward.

When they came, I used to give them each a little piece of salami or pepperoni. It worked like a charm and they liked it and thought it was a game.

Years ago when I had a cat named Stanley, I used to call him "Baby" sometimes. Sometimes they used to have the song "Kids of the baby boom" on the radio and I could tell he really liked that song, because he knew the word "baby" so he must have thought the song was about him.

When I had cats years ago in the 1980's I was trying to learn Chinese, so whenever I was playing the tapes or trying to practise saying some Chinese, my cats, used to look at me funny.

I also was trying to learn how to play a mouth organ and had to quit because my cats used to make noises, the kind of sound they make to their kittens.

One time a guy was talking French to a dog that I had. She was acting just like she understood him, but he still kept on talking to her in French and claimed she could understand (after never being spoken to in French or had any French lessons).

I said to him, "She doesn't understand French" but he replied, "Sure, she does. Look!" She was acting very friendly to him and acted like she understood him.

I will have to experiment on my nephews' Guinea pigs and report back. They are really noisy, and definitely react to the fridge door ;D

Sadly, our guinea pigs passed away long before I learned Esperanto, so I can't try it out.
