Is "con" being used here as the classifier for knife? If so, why? It seems like cái or chiếc would be more appropriate
You can say "cái dao" but there are some nouns that just so happen to use "con" as its main classifier. Con dao (knife) is one and some others include con số (number) and con đường (path/road).
