Is "I walked to the park" a valid translation?

I'd say so yes. I think I would use "richting het park" if I would have to translate "towards the park" myself

It's really strange because "I ran to the park." would be a correct alternative and I always thought "lopen" isn't the same as "rennen".

"To a Dutch person, 'lopen' and 'wandelen' are synonyms, and can be translated as 'walking'. 'Rennen' is 'running'.

To a Flemish person, 'wandelen' is 'walking'. 'Rennen' and 'lopen' are synonyms, and can be translated as 'running".

Since this is a course for Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands, we have decided not to accept 'lopen=running'. However, it can indeed occasionally be said by a Dutch person as a shorter form of 'hardlopen'."

The above is a direct quote from Rhynn's comment at https://www.duolingo.com/comment/4031435

It's also a bit of a context thing... while mainly "lopen" is "walking", it can be used for running as well, as mentioned above...

  • Hoeveel wedstrijden loop je dit jaar? - How many events/matches are you running/participating in this year?
  • Loopt hij de 100 of de 200m? - Obviously a sprint, so running
  • De favoriet loopt op baan 4. - Favorite + track = match = running ;)

Now I think about it some more, almost all examples I can think of where it sounds normal/obvious are competitive/match related (in context). If I'd say something like "Ik heb zin om een stukje te gaan lopen" you'd have to know me to be able to tell whether I'm going for a relaxing walk in the park or a 10km run somewhere ;)
