Obviously feminine/masculine nouns and their articles

duo i was reading this and thinking about het meisje. Isn't this both referring to a person, and quite clearly feminine? should I generally expect a lot of exceptions to these guidelines....?

Meisje is with 'het' because the 'je' suffix indicates a diminitive and diminitives always get the article 'het'.

Same thing happens in German: Das M├Ądchen = Het meisje = the girl is also neutral and not feminine.

Girl meisje is ofcourse feminine, but "meisje" is a so called "verkleinwoord (diminutive), it has "-je" added to it. Words with "-je" ALWAYS have "het" with it. E.g. de man - het mannetje. de vrouw - het vrouwtje. de snor (moustache) - het snorretje. de meid (girl or maid) - het meisje...
