I learned a lot about English through studying Russian. Both in the grammatical structure (cases! that's why personal pronouns change form!) to word origins -- for example, it never occurred to me that 'dependent' comes from depend = to hang from, until I learned зависеть, and its meaning of hanging... Learning and thinking about how Russian works taught me a lot about how English works.
