Problem with strengthening skills
As I am approaching to the end of the course it is becoming more and more difficult to finish it, but not because of exercises, but due to crazy strengthening algorithm. At first everyday I needed to strengthen 2 skills, but now it become so much, that I don't see how to finish a course with all tasks done.
Another thing is what I just experience for the 5th-6th time - I finish strengthening one skill and it doesn't raise strength-meter it stay on 4. Ok, I thought I made few mistakes, so maybe because of this, but than I done it perfectly and still it didn't move??? Come on...it is nonsense and doesn't improve any skill at all, what is happening?
I've seen some strategies that may help you, from the Duo main discussion. I really hope this will help you and let us know when you gold your tree :-)
- Each day do a couple of skill-specific strengthening exercises.
- Work up from the bottom on the skill-specific strengthening.
- While the tree is incomplete, do two strengthening exercises and one new exercise.
- When the tree is all gold you should be able to maintain it with a couple of general strengthening exercises per day. Avoid using hints unless you're really not sure of the word, or can't make an educated guess as to it's meaing.
I'm taking things slow at the moment and focusing on strengthening my vocabulary and grammar.
If you learned a skill and strengthen it enough, you don't need to strengthen again and again, it's not a necessary if you are good enough at it.
Sometimes it makes you strengthen it a couple of times before going up a level. It's done that to me a few times. One thing I would recommend is strengthening the lessons closer to the end of the tree first, as it will sometimes also strengthen lessons farther back.
Duolingo uses a spaced repetition approach. It shows you things you've learned at times that will most help them stick in your head. If you keep the tree gold, you'll find it works really well. Sometimes that means you don't make any progress through the tree for a while - that's fine.
Duolingo takes account of how long it takes you to answer the question, and it takes account of whether or not you "peek" - whether or not you hold the mouse over the word to see what it means. When you can answer the questions quickly and without peeking, the skills will decay slower.
After you've strengthened the skills a few times, they'll start decaying more slowly, and then you'll be able to get further through the tree.
