I'd like to create or meet some esperantists

What should I do? I'm sixteen and homeschool. I think creating a class or group at a local high school would be interesting, but maybe only to me. I'd at least be able to bike to that.

Otherwise, I could try to create a group at my library or food co-op. I feel like Esperanto would be something the co-op people would appreciate. The library might be neat because it'd be more official, and it gets a lot more traffic than the co-op(not sure they'd let me advertise the group... actually, they probably would let me put an advert on one of their events calendars, whereas the co-op would just be a poster)

Any thoughts or ideas? If you don't think this is a good idea, there is a group within two hours of my location, it's just not as convenient as these would be. Definitely going to check that out before I start my own and ask for help from them, too, but I can't wait to get planning this. I am overflowing with enthusiastic impatience. : P

All sounds doable to me. A group that meets together at the library, practive via duo and possibly work your way through the teach yourself esperanto book or the lernu lessons. Pretty much how old school esperantists often did it? Go for it, what's the worst that can happen?

Estus mirinde :D

I could not find a group in my area (Salt Lake City), so I started my own, Babilada Kafejo, on meetup.com.

Awesome! How'd it go? Did you have much trouble getting Esperantists to join?

Sadly you need to be 18 to use meetup. I could have someone make a group though.. Think I should?

I posted the group in all of the Esperanto forums I know about (http://www.meetup.com/Babilada-Kafejo/), but it is very hard to find other Esperantists. There were three of us for one meeting and only two of us for another. For the first two weeks that meetings were scheduled, no one else came! But it is still great to talk with other Esperantists in Esperanto.

I'd really like to collect people who are just interested in learning Esperanto, because I doubt there are a whole lot around here. We'll see how it goes :P

You could use Facebook instead, its age limit is 13. Just create a group and invite people, then create events once in a while.

Funny that you couldn't find a group, because I was just on Esperanto-USA's website and they have a group listed for Utah. Is that your group that you created, or did that group disband? I wish you success with your group!

Esperanto-USA has now replaced the UTELO group (which no longer exists as far as I can tell) with my Tuesday night meetup, Babilada Kafejo. Thanks Esperanto-USA! There is also a student club at BYU in Provo.

Dankon. The group listed by Esperanto-USA is "UTELO (Utaha Esperanto-Ligo)". They no longer exist - or at least their website is a 404 and no one replies to their email or phone messages. I have notified Esperanto-USA of this, but they continue to list it anyway. My group, "Babilada Kafejo" is not really a club or organization. There are no officers, dues, or agendas. It is just a weekly meetup where Esperantists can speak Esperanto with each other. There is also an Esperanto club at BYU that I hope to contact once the fall semester starts.

It's been helping a friend of mine, who's hispanic, learn to speak Spanish more fluently. His parents never got to really teach him as a child, but we we're translating with each other words and it's crazy how many words are similar. :)

That people have told me that? Course. Hoping you meant is it true that it has helped me, in which case, I can't yet say. I think so, but I've pretty focused on Esperanto lately, and haven't done any German. But I believe that when I am ready to go back to it, I'll be much more comfortable speaking it. Here's a page about it. http://www.fluentin3months.com/2-weeks-of-esperanto/

Some studies have been made about the propaedeutic value of esperanto (fancy scientific term that means Esperanto helps learning another language).

The evidence is week, but all results are positive. I don't think studies have been made or compared to evaluate the difference with how learning another language could help learning a third one. But Esperanto has the advantage of being very easy to learn (compared to other languages), and being able to speak after a very short time helps heaps with motivation.
