Mandarin: nán

Cantonese: naam

Sixian: nàm

  1. 針 ‘needle’

Mandarin: zhēn

Cantonese: zam1

Hokkien: cham

Not sure if this compound is used in Chinese though.

So it seems that the concept of magnet appeared related to the compass (even if the word for compass is different).

Also that they had the south as reference, as opposed to the West where we always think in locating the North.
