Difference between Kennen and Wissen?
So I know that Wissen is "To know" when talking about information, and Kennen is "To know" when talking about people, but if you say "Do you know [Insert random celebrity]", would you use Kennen or Wissen, or is it that you would use Kennen if you mean "Do you know them personally?", and Wissen to say "Do you know of/any information about them?". Thanks for any answers.
"Jemand kennen" is to be familiar with a person, to be acquainted with someone. "Wissen" is used to say that you know some sort of information or fact. So to answer your question, you could say " Ich weiß, dass Heinrich ein sehr beliebter Mensch ist." but you would say "Ich kenne Heinrich." To ask if someone knows someone about someone else, it would be " Kennst du Heinrich? Weißt du etwas über ihn?"
As a side note, it was made embarrassingly clear to me by ma coworkers that to say "ich weiß ihn" means to know someone in the ahem biblical sense... but it may have been "mess with the Ausländer day" ... :D
I never heard about the biblical sense of ich weiß ihn, I would use ich kenne ihn intim or wir stehen uns sehr nahe, maybe a regional thingy.
Kennen = To know/to be familiar with (people, not facts) Wissen = To know (facts)
The verb " kennen" is followed by an accusative and " wissen" has no accusative. For instance, Ich kenne diese Stadt ( I know this city). Wir wissen schon( we know well).
Kennen : to know ( English) ; connaître ( French). Wissen : to know ( English) ; savoir ( French)
