In my case it asked for "the string", but did not accept "Cái sợi dây". Why? Or is it that string should use a different classifer i.e. cac Sợi dây?
sợi = yarn and đây = rope/jute/cord/tie/band ... so I think sợi is a kind of classifier here and it would explain why you don't need cái first?

It would be understood but normally if you want to specify "the" something you add the classifier.
