"something" is pretty indefinite... it's not a cow, not a book, not a person, not anything you can put your finger on definitely -- just something.
"expect" should be accepted
It is accepted now.
Check, I don't know whether I'm doing something wrong or something has changed but now I couldn't get either "I'm expecting something" or "I expect something" accepted... :(

It can be both and most of the time they don't sound the same. Vár valamit is more in the scope of "expect" while vár valamire is more "wait for".
