Yes, we refer to Rio de Janeiro as "Rio". When writing, use capital letter (upper case). ;)

I had to look it up on a dictionary cause I had never seen this word before. This is what I have found:

  1. Terreno baixo, bem próximo às margens de um rio, geralmente banhado por ele.

  2. Faixa de terra baixa, inundada pelas águas de um rio ou pelo mar.

  3. Pequeno rio; regato, riacho, ribeiro, ribete.
