Too strict... sometimes?

Sometimes when typing in Russian the answer to a question I'll get one letter wrong. Then, sometimes I'll get it right (it'll say I was close). Same thing with leaving out a letter, sometimes I get it right and other times it doesn't. I don't quite understand this inconsistency, and it frustrates me each time. I would understand if it changed the meaning of the sentence, but it doesn't.

Could someone elaborate on why this happens?

Correct Answer: Они не видят ничего My Answer: Они не видит ничего

I would understand if it changed the meaning of the sentence, but it doesn't.

This is exactly how Duolingo handles typos: if your misspelling makes a valid word that doesn't fit the sentence (and it is the case here!), it will be counted as a mistake.

Видит is a singular 3rd person form, you should use the plural one — видят.

Duolingo will typically accept minor typos if the resulting word is not a word it recognises. If you had typed вилят or видат for example, you might have got marked as a typo.

However, видит is a legitimate word, part of the conjugation of that verb, and Duolingo recognises it. The system can't read your mind to determine if you did a typo or you don't know the conjugation of the verb (and и я are not even neighbouring letters) therefore goes with the safest/most conservative assumption: that you made an error.

I think the one-letter-off errors get counted as wrong when it's in a verb conjugation or noun declension. More weight is given to them because overall they are grammatically more important.

Look at it this way: be thankful it's smart enough to let any typos through at all! That Rosetta Stone couldn't was one reason I could never get anywhere close to finishing.

Translate this text These are lakes. I typed: Эти озёра Duolingo responds: You used the wrong word.Это озёра. ??? Isn't that like saying "This are lakes?"

In Russian the demonstrative это does not change its gender or number—regardless of what you say it is or was. «Эти озёра» means "these lakes".

Russian course seems to reject answers when it fails to recognize English contractions. Что это значит "What's it mean?" gives wrong answer "What does it mean?" works Also, sometimes says I'm using the wrong English article when there is no context in the Russian sentence to determine whether a/an/the should be used.

Report away :)

There are cases where even a context-free Russian noun snippet would seem to pretty much demand an article in English. For instance were there a prompt "сумка картошки," I could see requiring "a" or "the" in front of "bag of potatoes" because the situations where this phrase could actually be used without an article are very limited (after "one" or possessives—maybe that's about it?) However, such situations do seem to be treated inconsistently in practice, even within the same unit (think I experienced this in the Measure one just a day or two ago). So, report button it would seem to be!
