Mostly number 4, but without all this extrovert stuff. I mean: talking with people?! Showing myself on YouTube? Big NOPE!

Yeah, I'm not a youtube person either. I don't even like my picture taken. I take pictures of my cats on my phone, and that's the only thing I have to do with a camera at all!

Re #5 - a real linguist type is far more likely to be distracted by analyzing your grammar than by correcting it. It's "oh, you used a really interesting construction there! I should make a mental note about that so I can analyze it!" not "you had bad grammar there".

Linguists have it hammered into us that real grammar is how people use language, and that the prescribed rules in style books etc are mostly arbitrary, so we're less likely than many others to correct grammar. (Correcting the idea that linguists are critical of other people's grammar, however...)

And listening attentively to the language being spoken at the other table ... yup, that sounds right on target.

(And yeah, #5 is closest to where I fit.)

(And if I'm being overly literal about a humour piece - apologies. I have a bad habit of that.)

Hi there! You have a point, for sure - my linguist friends tell me, in true academic spirit, that their approach is "descriptive, not prescriptive".

Exactly!

None of the above.

You can't just leave us hanging like this, man! Spill! ;-)

:) I wish there was some mystery, but I just don't feel like I fit into any of those categories. In addition to the two I grew up speaking, I'm just learning a single additional language as a hobby and out of interest for the culture, and I have no more than a passing interest in other languages.

Darn it, I've missed out the "Sane&Sensible Linguist" ;-)

I think "sensible linguist" is just what you get when you combine small quantities of all the others: a bit of pragmatism, a bit of wanderlust, a bit of grammar geekery, a bit of (over)confidence, etc....

True :) Extremes are much better blog fodder though ;-)

Ha ha, not bad. Better than "boring" I guess :)

I like your articles btw. Think I've read all the ones you've posted so far. Keep it up!

Aw, thank you :)

Yes I am the same, just 'normal' :)

On an unrelated note, I'm surprised nobody has been offended by the naming of #4 yet.

Ha, I did wonder whether I'd maybe pushed it a bit too far... but glad to see it's not been taken too seriously so far. I might actually re-name this one... I already have an idea... DONE!

Nice alternative :)

The closest one I come to is number 4 :)

me too but I resent the male stereotype aspie portrayed, we females are more mature and are content to read and not embarass ourselves on youtube

Glad you didn't take it too seriously ;-)

Mother of a streak you've got there! Never seen a four digit one before...!

Hm...I'm gonna have to go with half #1 and half #5

August 23, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SimoneBa

Could I have the other half of your #1 pls?!?

Very nice! :D

I don't know if I fit any of them: I appreciate a language for its structure, its words and their etymologies, its grammar, its idiomatic expressions. I would say I'm a hobbyist linguist... no letters after my name, though :D

Hello there! Hmm.... how about "The Dabbler"? I'll ad that to the updated edition, if I ever get round to it ;-)

It could be, but I'll have to wait for the update to check if it fits :)

I'll send you the draft version beforehand ;-)

I'm turning into 3 with an unhealthy dose of 5. The eavesdropping part of it, at least! ;)

I have really itchy feet, and am a bit of a lingacademic. I wish I was a silver spoon multilingual. Maybe if I have kids they will be. I'd settle for them being nothing less than trilingual from birth.

August 24, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SimoneBa

I flirt with being lingacademic, but the technicality of it scares me. I see you're planning ahead here :)

I am none of them. My talent is that I can speak any languages without an accent and will always try to start a conversation in the language. I know a little bit of several languages (Japanese, Greek, Croatian) but only used them for my travel and already forgot most of it. I am a slow learner but will always achieve his goal no matter what
