Some prepositions take accusative or dative case depending on the action

June 14, 2012

Briefly, if you want to express a location, where some action takes place, a dative is usually used; if you want to express a direction, towards some action points, an accusative is used. For example: Der Teller ist auf dem Tisch. (Location, dative.) Sie legt den Teller auf den Tisch. (Direction, accusative.)
