Could λαγός mean just "rabbit" or is it specifically a jack rabbit?

Λαγός is a jack rabbit, rabbit is "κουνέλι" in greek

Personally I'm enjoying all this vocabulary and although much of it may seem a little useless at this stage i think it gives some useful insight. Dunno, maybe that's just me!

I think this is where the scientific name for European hare (Lagos europeaus) comes from.

According to wikipedia the genus is Lepus, not Lagos, but the order is Lagomorpha. :)

I like it to learn some not so obvious words like cats and dogs, it awakens your interest. And as for mammals, I think this is an important word as well. I remember learning Latin and wondered why I had to learn it. But years later I benefit from it. Thank you I like this method very much.

In Istanbul, we have a Bosphorus fish called "Lagos". I'm pretty sure it was adapted from Greek, I wonder if there is a correlation between the ethimology of two animals :)

I can't believe they marked 'rabbit' wrong!!!! In the US we don't make a distinction!

some people do, but most people I've ever heard don't. I think it's more of an old-fashioned kind of distinction. Like in Aesop's fable, it's not called The Tortoise and The Rabbit lol
