Être en train de...

In some duolingo exercises I have seen the phrase "être en train de" used but I don't think it's ever explained. So I will do my best to do so for anyone who does not understand it. Être en train de means "to be in the process of". As we do not use the progressive participle in French the same way we do in English (i.e. we do not say "Je suis faisant" while in English we do say "I am doing") être en train de is used to insist continuous action. E.g. Je suis en train d'apprendre le françias - I am in the process of learning French.

This can also be used in the simple past tense Rather than saying Je mangais quand il est rentré You can use J'etais en train de manger quand il est rentré

être en cours de has a similar meaning, but it's passive and is usually followed by a noun E.g La maison est en cours d'aménagement - the house is being renovated.
