ease of learning
So out of the 5 languages, spanish, french, german, italian ,portuguese how would you rank them from easiest to hardest to learn for an english speaker
The hardest one for me to learn would be the one I'm least interested in learning. I'm learning Spanish because I've found plenty of fanfiction in that language that I want to read. :)
Spanish and French are closely related to English, and therefore would be easy to learn.
Well, there are some statistics on that, but it largely depends on how much you are into the language and its culture. People will tell you that Spanish is very easy but I feel like I may never get past the basics and French and Italian seem to be going quite well.
Once I tried to read something in Italian, French, and Spanish. Same book, many different translations. (Yay for gift shops!)
I speak Romanian, so in order of ease, for me, it's: 1. Italian (never studied it, understood it best of all.) 2. French (studied it often) 3. Spanish 4. Portuguese 5. German
The easiest for an English speaker is probably Spanish. French, I'm finding, has a lot more complicated details. But that may be because I'm further down the tree in French.
As an American English speaker, I'd go Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, and I'm mostly guessing the last two because I have not studied them as much. I feel I have learned many Spanish words growing up without studying just because of cultural osmosis as well, so your regional background probably plays a role in how easy you find a language.
