Why is the 'za' involved in this sentence?

It's needed in such sentences which show amazement, or surprise, also questions.

Co to był za mecz! = What a game that was!

Co to za butelka? = What (kind of) bottle is that? (Why is it here?)

A co to za wygłupy?! = What is this fooling around?!

(just some quick examples as I'm kinda in a hurry)

Immery (I think) made a comment on a similar statement, explaining that without 'za' it would be more like "what (is) a strange question" - the "what" being more literal and not an expression of surprise.

Well: Co to (jest) "butelka"? would be a question for the definition of the word 'butelka'.

I'd propose "Such a strange question!" as a valid, common, English expression.

    how about "crazy question"?

    What is the strange question?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jellei

    No, that doesn't work.

    What a bizarre question?

Added "What a bizarre question!" and "Such a bizarre question!".

Why not "What's with the weird question? "

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JerryMcCarthy99

I think that's quite different. "What/Such a weird question!" is an exclamation that doesn't require an answer. "What's with...?" is more of question expecting an explanation....

Also, I'm not sure that we accept "weird", although I think we could.

    Yes, we do accept "weird".

As for "What's with the weird question?", I'm not sure how to translate it... maybe as "O co chodzi z tym dziwnym pytaniem?", maybe even as "Co to za dziwne pytanie?", but still, even if it's (almost) the same thing, it still has a question mark instead of an exclamation mark that we have here.
