How Duolingo has helped me

I know there are a lot of these going round, so here's mine.

I live in the UK, and the major tests you do at the age of 15/16 (depending on when you're born) are called GCSEs. You obviously do work towards these from the start of senior school (at the age of 11/12), but the main two years of work towards them are from 13-15/14-16, when you choose the subjects you would like to take for GCSE as well as taking the core subjects (Sciences, Maths, English and RS). For my optionary subjects I would have loved to have done French, German and Spanish, but the school stopped teaching Spanish a few years back, so I chose Geography instead. After you take GCSEs, you go on to A-levels or college, then Uni if you want. I've decided to do A-levels, and for them (4 subjects) you need to have done the subject at GCSE and gotten a B or higher (unless the subject isn't available at GCSE, then it doesn't matter). I knew that the sixth form (where you take A-levels) I wanted to go to offered French, German and Spanish, so I asked if I would be able to do these three, explaining that I hadn't done the Spanish GCSE. They told me to write a short essay in Spanish to see if I was good enough, and they said that I was easily so!

In short, if you weren't bothered to read the above paragraph, I've learned the same amount of Spanish in 7 months on Duolingo as I did for German and French in two years! ¡Muchas gracias por vuestra ayuda!

I'm also amazed by how effective Duolingo is. I am never wasting years of my life in pricey language courses again!

I took a semester of Spanish in college and I feel like Duolingo is so much more effective then sitting in a classroom and listening to a lecture. And it's much more fun. Congrats on learning so much Spanish :)

Good to hear! I think Duolingo would have put me up a grade or two at A level Spanish if I'd had it back then. Best of luck!
