I am a passionate Irish study, dying to become fluent in what probably should be my native tongue. Anyone who comments and ups in this discussion: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/1746430 , I will give lingots to.
Irish is a beautiful and historic language. It is one of the few Celtic languages still spoken by a sizeable amount of people (approx. 1.7 million). It is thought to be one the oldest living European languages (along with Basque, Lithuanian and Welsh, all three of which I would also like to learn)! At one stage, the Celtic languages dominated Europe, and many accounts of battles between the Latin-speaking Romans and the Celts have been recorded.
Here in Ireland, we study Irish in schools, but it is taught much the same as English is taught in English-speaking countries (which is very counter-intuitive when people are incapable of speaking the language). Hopefully, with a very good Duolingo course that I'm sure alexinIreland could make, we can preserve and get more people speaking this ancient language.
I know that someday, Duolingo will have an Irish course at some point, but, with the help of the enthusiastic Duolingo community, we can bring that moment a bit closer.
