Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from September 4th to September 11th
Today marks one of the gruesome days in the human history. From the beginning of the mankind, we have seen a lot of goodness spread around by men and women. And then, we have also seen sporadic acts of violence that have tried to dent the human progress. The human spirit has always persistently moved the humanity towards betterment. It will continue to do so!
Duolingo - the experiment by Luis and team, and the thriving Duolingo community of contributors and learners represent the virtues that are part of each human being. The positive forces such as these need to be nurtured to allow the good to conquer over the evil.
In the coming years, I sincerely hope that Duolingo continues to play its part in helping the world heal, helping the world thrive by helping build mutual understanding and respect. And it all starts with learning a few words from a foreign language. The xenoglossophobia gradually disappears. Along with it the xenophobia evaporates. We have one beautiful planet and one short life. Lets make the best of it!
A slower week
After a lot of action, the incubator has had a slow week. We only have three team updates this week.

Philippine flag icon
Not really an update but a query? Why is there no Philippine flag icon for Tagalog, whereas the American flag is there for English?
புதிய பங்களிப்பாளர்! New Contributor!
bharad.kv-ஐ நான் இப்பயிற்சியறையில் வருக வருக என வரவேற்கிறேன்!
I am happy to welcome bharad.kv to the lesson room!
Slower week this after a lot of action in the prior one.
Previous Update 28-Aug to 4-Sep
Thanks and congrats on your 2^10 streak!!!! :D
Hey, I counted 5% total improvement this week, so still nothing to sneeze at. That would equate to a course hatching every 20 weeks. I appreciate every contributor.
THANK YOU ALL.
Thanks and congrats on your 2^10 streak!!!! :D
I love your 2e10 congratulations :D
- 2^10 = 1024
- 2e10 = 2*10^10 = 20,000,000,000
My God, that was so stupid. I have no idea how I could write it like that. I guess I should not comment on anything when I'm tired :D Thanks a lot, edited it.
I would imagine it won't take that long for Tagalog, but I wonder how they are going to deal with representation for the Indian languages.
Poorly, if their choice of Punjabi flag is anything to go by. Or maybe they have a plan and just haven't changed it since it isn't that urgent. And Tagalog is already on the flag sprite so it should be here any week now.
Yeah, I don't understand the Punjabi flag choice at all. It looks darker than the Hindi flag, but that just might be my eyes. Perhaps they'll change it later...? Two courses cannot have the same flag.
What's this about Punjabi!?
I guess this is just in relation to the flag in the incubator "apply" section.
Perhaps they will use the unofficial flag of Tamil Eelam for the Tamil course:
I have seen that flag used to represent Tamil before, I just have been unable to find it.
Tamil Eelam only refer to Sri Lankan Tamils though, not the more numerous Tamils in India (Tamil Nadu).
Unless Tamils not of Sri Lankan origin also use that flag?
Dunno. I can't think of any obvious solution. They could use a letter of the Tamil alphabet, or the om symbol in Tamil script maybe.
The problem with anything to do with Tamil Eelam is that it can also be interpreted politically - I am friends with some Sri Lankan Tamils who don't want anything that would imply that they are linked to the Tamil Tigers for example.
You can check the sprite for flags, Yiddish has a flag, but it's not showing on the incubator yet: https://d7mj4aqfscim2.cloudfront.net/images/flag-sprite11.svg
I know, but it has been there for months. Which I guess defines the Yiddish course itself.
Duolingo needs to either get the contributors to work again or remove them all and get new contributors who are active and want to help make the course imo
I wish duolingo gave people a chance. For example Judith Mlynárová. She says she speaks Yiddish and learned teaching in school, she applied numerous times to be ignored. People like her should be put on. I bet she can do more in a week than they did in the past 8 months!!!!!
I know right!! There are many people (well, not many, but several) who could easily be contributors and have already applied. We could see Yiddish in beta by January, but with the way things are going it won't happen.
The flag for Yiddish has been discussed on here before. The issue is actually a little controversial...
I'm actually not sure, I'm not too good with flags, and I tried googling some possible ones, but no results matched.
In the coming years, I sincerely hope that Duolingo continues to play its part in helping the world heal, helping the world thrive by helping build mutual understanding and respect.
Indeed and well said.
I wish Duolingo would do some more ads or something to get the word spread, I know they already have like 140 million users sans advertising so far, but learning a language does help the world get along better and brakes down language barrier, I feel like that should be something that should be put out there more.
I agree, but they are struggling to make a profit as it is. Maybe they could start with more ads in their own site first...
Why does Esperanto for Spanish speakers have Hindi where Esperanto should be? I know it's a bug, but is staff aware? Could there be an error with the flag sprite page?(I would love to see Hindi for Spanish speakers, hopefully they put that in soon(along with Finnish))
Thank you for the acknowledgement to what is a sad day for our country. May good always prevail over evil, and may peace last eternally.
Also, thanks for the update. I always enjoy seeing the new one.
Thanks for the update. Are you still recruiting for the Hindi for English course? If no, then when are you going to? Please reply. Thanks
I just saw http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Course_list again and learned that https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/es/ar/status exists. :)
When did that happen? I've been waiting for that course for a while. Not because I'm going to use it, since I don't speak Arabic, but still.
I don't think it'll be months. It'll most likely be here by November. :)
