This (is) the food of the dog of me.

I feel like that translation makes me sense and helps me to understand it more clearly.

I don't want to learn how to convert Hebrew into English thoughts.

I want to learn to think/speak in Hebrew.

thank you i was trying to figure out how this flowed in direct translation

ze ha-óchel shel ha-kélev shelí.

Can we say זה אוכל כלבי wich would be faster ? Or we can't make 2 סומך like this ?

In theory, yes, but not in practice. Suffixes are nowadays used in some fixed expressions and with body parts and with some family members. Using them with animals, food would be very unusual.

Why not "this food is my dog's?" I tried that and was wrong.

I believe you are correct. I just put in the same thing you did and got the question right.

Why not, "This dog is my food?"

They have that sentence in duolingo's Korean course. (Sorry couldn't resist.)

I'm a Korean contributor and I didn't know that, but yay Korean!

Tips and notes have a good explanation on those. They are available only on the web page. Here's a direct link, if you can't find them:

... so next time ask before your eat something.

Right? It's so rude when people eat your dog's food XD

Would this transliterate to something like, "This food is of the dog of mine?"

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Striped_Leopard

It seems to me that the most literal translation would be "This is the food of the dog of me/mine."

Why not 'this food belongs to my dog'? The ordering of the words makes this seem right but it is rejected

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/danny912421

That would be האוכל הזה שייך לכלב שלי. Note that "bolong" is translated as שייך, not של, which is "of".

"meal" - ארוחה

Why not "this dog's food is mine"? Can someone please explain how to tell the difference?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/danny912421

I think that would be

האוכל של הכלב הזה הוא שלי

They are similar, but the emphasis is different.

זה הספר שלי - this is my book

הספר הזה שלי this book is mine

Why not, this is my dogs food?

[deactivated user]

That's the answer. Did you put that? I put that as my answer and got it right.

זה האוכל של הכלב שלי. I heard and transcribed her (male) dog: שלה כלב! I was incorrectly marked correct! (So easy to get caught up in the possession question and miss the listening error).

Why not "my dog's food" ?

That part is accepted. What was the rest of your answer?
