why isnt jumper/jersey accepted? sweater is american. most english speakers use jumper or jersey.

Well, a lot of Americans are English speakers! ;)

Regarding the sentence in question, what baffles me is what my fellow native Greek speakers refer to when they say "ζακέτα" because I always translate it as "cardigan". Regional inconsistencies perhaps?

all cardigans are technically jerseys/jumpers but not all jerseys/jumpers are cardigans - cardigans always have buttons, jerseys/jumpers do not always have buttons.
