With a "difficult situation", which is negative. I would not use the word "meet" as the translation for "gặp" which has a positive connotation. I would use "encounter" or "face". When I used "encounter," it was considered incorrect.

Perhaps...but Duolingo is asking you to translate what is written, not discuss nuance of writing styles :-p

When I used "meet" it was deemed incorrect.

I cannot argee that "meet" has only positive connotations. "Meet with disaster" or "meet resistance" or "meet a sad end" are common enough to demonstrate otherwise.

Either "meet" or "encounter" should be accepted. Both are correct.

I've heard a native person saying "chị ấy gặp tài nan".

My point, i think it's (somewhat) common to use gặp with a negative toned word in vietnamese. Just remember that gặp can be used like that in vietnamese.

I agree with the first comment that 'encounter' should be accepted as a translation, now Duo does not accept 'meet' as a translation. Surely you can accept both?

Should it be Doi mat then?

"Meet with" is also idiomatic.

"Encounter" and "meet" are direct synonyms.
