Does this refer to them working there location-wise or also employment-wise (they're employed by the department store)?

Would

"az új magyar áruháznál sok eladó dolgozik"

also be a correct translation of

"Many sales clerks are working at the new Hungarian department store."

in the employment sense?

Thanks!

What is suddenly wrong with salesmen?

If it is a steady job it should be "work" and not "are working". However, it was rejected. Extremely frustrating!

No. In English there is no difference without context but yes both should be accepted. "They are working" implies "right now" or "in the process of" whereas "they work" implies a steady or ongoing employment which may not be happening now.
