Well yes, I think one can say something like הוּא לוֹמֵד בִּשְׁבִיל עַצְמוֹ / הֶעָתִיד / לָדַ֫עַת he learns for himself / for the future / in order to know. Propose it.

Well, I think you could say as the teacher: אֲנִי מֵכִין מִבְחָן I prepare a test, but as a pupil, it is right to use the reflexive Hitpa'el: אֲנִי מִתְכּוֹנֵן לְמִבְחָן I prepare for a test.
