It's actually Greece-centric. It's the Greek course and most sentences are written from the Greek perspective. ;)
"To the East" should be accepted, I think.
The different thing about "to the east" is that you need to ask, "to the east of what?". For example, China is to the west of Japan. That means that you need a fixed reference point. ;)
