I'm not sure I understand this sentence in my own language. What does "They keep (maintain) the direction" even mean? Does that mean that they keep going the same way?

The English translation doesn't sound appropriate, in that "direction" typically wouldn't be used as an object with the verb "maintain". You'd be more likely to say "keep going in that direction".

"maintain the direction" is something used mostly for aircraft, I think?
