The person at a sports game making sure that everyone follows the rules. In Hungarian, that is also "bíró", sometimes "játékvezető" ("game-leader"). "Bíró" is also "judge" in the legal system.
Oh, please don't feel bad and say ouch about it. A century ago people were not nearly so sports-crazy as people are now. Perhaps it will fade in another century, and people will go back to dancing and singing like they used to do.
