In another sentence, "a spoon" was translated as "một chiếc muỗng". Should the classifier be "cái" or "chiế", or are they interchangeable?

I thought thìa was a regular spoon. what is the difference?

Cái muỗng is Southern Vietnamese for "the" spoon. "A" spoon would be một cái + muỗng or thìa (Northern Vietnamese).

Why is this "a" spoon and not "the" spoon?

The translation says "the spoon" though. Do you mean the opposite? If so, "a spoon" is "một cái muỗng" or "một cái thìa" depending on the region.

Southern: muỗng

Northern: thìa
