No good: "Nem úszunk a folyóban, hanem a tengerben."?

No good indeed. It has to be "Not A but B". Your A is "swimming", your B is "in the sea".

"Mi nem úszunk a folyóban hanem a tengerben" is not accepted.

Is the focus "uszunk" in the sentence i wrote? Does it make contextual difference?

Thanks

Your sentence would mean something like "It is not swimming that I do in the river, but in the sea." Which sounds just as off in English. The negation needs to be on "a folyóban", not "on úszunk".
