What is the technical difference between this sentence and "Il rend le livre."

The verb "rendre" means to "render", "to produce", or "to give" (though I don't think it means the same as "donner") but not necessarily to "bring back after having taken", as the verb "retourner" does. It's important in French to look at the whole surrounding idea of a word, not just the literal translation.

Thanks, IvoryFr96. However, Duolingo won´t accept "I render the book", but insists on "I return the book" for "Je rends le livre" Go figure.

What can I say? Either Duolingo is confused or this is just one of those French grammar isolated instances where the rules just don't apply...Or "retourner" could only mean to "return" in the sense that one is "coming back", not "bringing back".
